Per Diem Nursing

Hospitals need a lot of people to get the job done. Hospitals may use diem nurses to cater for staffing needs, as these can differ week to week. 

For example, if a region had a flu epidemic, a hospital may have a larger than normal census of patients, but since the epidemic will typically subside in a few weeks ' time, using per diem nurses helps the hospital to cover the epidemic without having to permanently hire staff for a temporary need.

Having a group of good nurses available per diem allows a hospital to keep down its costs by using those nurses only when they are needed.
